The heart of this essay for me was, "Rather than making Medicare-for-All a litmus test, we should start from the broader principle that comprehensive health care is a human right that should be guaranteed by the government—make that the litmus test—and then have an open debate about how best to get there." As someone recently on a Medicare Advantage program (discussed), and aware of the centrality of private insurance for Medicare supplemental and pharmacy plans, I felt persuaded that I needed to become more sophisticated in arguing for my passionate commitment to healthcare for all that removes the profit motive from private insurers. I may ultimately agree that Medicare for All is the best option, but a whole lot of people I talk to are going to challenge this position, including (alas) my CT representatives. This article woke me up to some of the issues and my overall need for more, substantial, information.
